Imagine: you bought a gear motor, mounted it on a conveyor - and three months later the engine burned out. And now you either have to replace the entire unit or look for a craftsman who will disassemble the integrated housing. Both options are simple and unplanned expenses. And if at the selection stage you had chosen a separate gearbox with a standard engine - the replacement would take an hour and cost half as much.
Actually, such situations arise when the choice between a reducer and a geared motor is made "by price", and not by operating conditions. And PROM-UA GROUP receives many such requests - from companies that have already made an unsuccessful purchase elsewhere and are looking for the right solution.
Gearbox and gearmotor - what is the fundamental difference?
The gearbox is a separate mechanical unit that reduces engine speed and increases output torque. It is connected to the engine via a clutch or belt drive. The engine and gearbox are independent units with different service lives and can be replaced separately. This is a key advantage in harsh operating conditions.
A geared motor is the same gearbox, but with the motor integrated into a single housing at the factory. The shafts, bearings and housings are designed to work together. The result is more compact dimensions, easier installation, fewer points of error during assembly. But also less flexibility during maintenance.
What types of gearboxes exist and where are they used in industry?
Cylindrical - the most common. Efficiency up to 98%, withstands constant loads. Optimal for conveyors, pumping stations, elevators. It can be one-, two- and three-stage - the more stages, the higher the gear ratio.
Wormy - provides a high gear ratio in a compact housing. The efficiency is lower (60–90%), but there is self-braking: when the load is removed, the shaft does not rotate by itself. Ideal for gates, shutters, lifting mechanisms.
Planetary - compact and powerful. The load is distributed over several satellites, so the resource is higher. It costs more, but justifies itself where accuracy and high torque in small dimensions are required - robotics, metalworking machines, extruders.
Conical - changes the direction of the axis of rotation by 90°. Indispensable when the engine and the working body are located at an angle to each other.
The PROM-UA GROUP assortment includes gearboxes and gearmotors for most standard industrial tasks - with selection for specific drive parameters.
Gear motor or separate gearbox: what to choose for a conveyor, mixer, elevator
The main question is when to take what.
A geared motor is justified if you are designing equipment from scratch, the operating conditions are standard, and compactness and ease of installation are more important than flexibility in maintenance. It performs well in the food industry, packaging lines, and the agricultural sector - where installation time and small installation space are important.
A separate gearbox is the best choice when the engine and gearbox have different resource and it is more logical to change them independently. Or when a non-standard engine is needed: explosion-proof, with increased IP, with a frequency converter at high power. And also - if the conditions are harsh: vibration, shock loads, chemically aggressive environment.
How to buy a gearbox and not make a mistake: key selection parameters
To make the selection without unnecessary clarifications, it is enough to know a few numbers.
Gear ratio - how many times the speed is reduced. With an engine of 1500 rpm and a gear ratio of i=20, the output shaft rotates at 75 rpm.
Output torque (Nm) - is selected with a margin of 1.25–1.5 from the calculated one. If you take it "closely" - the gearbox constantly works at the limit and wears out much faster.
Mounting design - horizontal or vertical shaft arrangement, flange or feet.
IP protection class - for wet or food shops, at least IP55, ideally IP65.
The resource of the gearbox directly depends on the quality of the internal bearings - they are the first to react to overload and improper lubrication. If the drive scheme has a chain transmission - the correct selection of drive chains will protect the gearbox shaft from excessive radial load.
Why gearboxes fail prematurely: typical mistakes
Selection at the lowest price without taking into account the operating mode is the most common cause of premature wear. A worm gear in the wrong mounting position overheats due to the incorrect level of lubrication. Ignoring starting peak loads with frequent starts and stops reduces the resource by half even with a high-quality unit. And saving on internal bearings is the most expensive "savings" possible: replacing the unit after two months of operation costs many times more than the difference in price between a cheap and high-quality option.
